Our task before the session was to read the ‘Learning outcomes and assessment criteria in art and design. What’s the recurring problem?’ by Allen Davies.

Reflection -WRITE REFLECTION HERE!
As an icebreaker, we were asked in our tutor groups to select a quote from the selection provided by the session leaders. Our group decided on the following two quotes:
” 8. while risk-taking is central to the critical thinking process, this behavior is unlikely to occur unless those involved have no sense of fear.’ (no citation)
” Sensory experiences are key in the formation of knowledge…sensory experiences affect emotions that initiate decision-making processes…Unexpected patterns of behaviour and language [are] used when describing sensory experiences. To facilitate teaching in an educational setting [we need to use] metaphors and visual language as words describing tactile experiences are relatively underdeveloped”.

I was particularly interested in the second quote, as it made me think of the term ’embodied learning’ which I was introduced to by the architectural theorist Juhani Pallasmaa’s book, The Thinking Hand. This book was very influential on me as it spoke about the value of making as an integral part of learning which has been a theme in my practice and brought me towards my teaching role which seeks to integrate live making and building into the curriculum.

I have followed up on this reading in the further reading section of my blog.
